A term borrowed from physics, the principle of complementarity demonstrates that one object can have two complementary states. Light for example, can be seen as either a particle or a wave, depending on how it is measured. This wave/particle paradox has been demonstrated experientially, but still remains the profound mystery of quantum physics.
When we apply this principle to our collaborative practice, dialogue, and interactions, complementarity means understanding different perspectives as necessary to get a complete picture of something. Our differing perspectives cease to be hurdles to growth, but necessary for growth.
Like in the physics experiment of measuring light as either wave or a particle, the lens we view something through changes the properties of what we’re viewing. Relating to others who have a different perspective than ours, not with tension, but with creative possibility, changes the state of the interaction itself. This process of relating to the “other side” through complementarity leads to new and surprising outcomes.
